Background Story

Rainer Joseph Sinclair-Zhou was born as the result of a love affair between Chinese Triad member, Charles Zhou, and British-Korean pianist, Eleanor Sinclair.They met in Hong Kong for the first time in 1986 during Charles' business trip. He met Eleanor, who was in Hong Kong due to an invitation by the British Consul General to play at a charity piano concert.One fateful meeting turned into dates, and dates turned into a secret love affair in Hong Kong. Unfortunately, while Eleanor was six months pregnant, Charles had to send her back to London due to a Triad war.Eleanor, who was six months pregnant, had to stay with her best friend, who was also her sister-in-law, Maria Sinclair. Alfred Sinclair, Eleanor's alcoholic older brother, had been married to Maria for years but they hadn't had any children.Charles promised Eleanor that he would be with her when the baby was due. The Triad war lasted longer than anyone expected. It also took Charles' life a week before his child was born. Before he passed away from his gunshot wounds, Charles told his older brother, Alexander, about Eleanor and their child. He made him promise to take care of them after he passed.Without knowing about her lover's fate, Eleanor gave birth to a healthy baby boy. She and Charles had decided the baby would be named Rainer Joseph because both liked rainy weather and Church of Saint Joseph in Hong Kong was their secret passage to their flat.Days turned to weeks, weeks turned to months, and months turned to years without any news about Charles, leading Eleanor to believe that her lover had met his fate. Knowing her life wouldn’t be long, Eleanor made her brother and sister-in-law promise to take and treat Rainer just like their own child. She left an inheritance for her son in their care. Due to ovarian cancer, Eleanor followed Charles two weeks before Rainer’s second birthday.Since that day, Rainer got a birth certificate and became Alfred and Maria Sinclair's biological child. Alfred worked as a low-level government official while Maria worked as a private music teacher. Maria really loved and cared for her adoptive son while her husband only cared about his sister's inheritance and alcohol.Sometimes he beat them when he got drunk, but on good days he could take them in his car for a picnic, just like on the day they had a car accident.Alfred, who was driving under the influence of alcohol after a family picnic at the beach, lost control of the car on a rainy day, entered the wrong lane, and hit a truck.Both Alfred and Maria died before the ambulance arrived while Rainer, who was six years old, sustained injuries. After being treated at the hospital, social services came and placed Rainer in an orphanage in London. Luckily, Alexander finally showed up and brought him to California, USA.In California, Rainer was raised by Alexander and his wife along with their children. He learned to speak English, Mandarin, and Bahasa.At 16 years old, Rainer joined his uncle to learn about the family business while attending senior high school. Rainer was trained to be a Triad member; he learned martial arts, firearm use, and, of course, the Triad code of Guanxi.After graduating from senior high school, he earned dual degrees in Architecture and Financial Management from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.After finishing his studies, he moved back to California to work at a big architecture firm while maintaining his part in the family business. Initially, he was trusted with managing the local funds before handling the Zhou's money laundering. Taking advantage of his network as a well-known architect, he managed to invest his family’s illegal fortune into legal properties.As his responsibilities for the Zhou grew, Rainer chose to build his own architecture firm, Infinite, so he could work more freely for the Zhou. The Zhou sent Tiffany Hsu to be his assistant in the architecture firm and partner in crime. Both of them grew closer and fell in love. Unfortunately, after a year in a relationship, the Zhou discovered that Tiffany Hsu was a mole, a spy from another Triad family due to her grudge against the Zhou.Rainer had to watch his uncle shoot her in the head. Since that day, the relationship between Rainer and his uncle became estranged even after his uncle got dissapeared.Ten years after that incident, Rainer is now a Managing Director for the Singapore Fine Arts Museum, a private museum that serves as a front for the Zhou’s money laundering and storage.
